What to Expect

February on the islands is a time of raw beauty, where cold, unpredictable weather transforms the landscape into a dramatic masterpiece. The fierce winter elements—crashing waves and dramatic skies—create the perfect canvas for capturing moody seascapes and breathtaking landscapes. The low, golden winter light casts a magical glow, enhancing the atmosphere of every shot, while the quieter islands, with fewer tourists, offer an unspoiled backdrop for truly unique and striking photographs. It’s the ultimate time for photographers to capture the raw power and serene beauty of the islands in their most captivating form.

Must-See Photography Spots

  • Luskentyre Beach – Famous for its white sands and turquoise waters, Luskentyre is one of the most photographed beaches on the Isle of Harris and is just a short drive from Stornoway.

  • Seilebost Beach – Another incredible beach on Harris, with sweeping views and fewer crowds, making it ideal for peaceful photography.

  • Callanish Stones – These ancient stone circles are surrounded by dramatic landscapes, offering incredible opportunities for striking and memorable shots.

  • Uig Sands – Located on the Isle of Lewis, Uig Sands offers panoramic coastal views, perfect for sunrise or sunset photography.

  • The Butt of Lewis – The island's northernmost point, featuring dramatic cliffs and a lighthouse that makes for stunning seascape shots.

  • The Gearrannan Blackhouse Village – A historic site showcasing traditional Hebridean life, perfect for a unique blend of architecture and landscape photography.

These are just a few highlights, and the Isles of Lewis and Harris are packed with countless hidden gems and stunning viewpoints that we will visit. We love Lewis and Harris as they provide such incredible and diverse photography opportunities, from remote beaches to breathtaking cliffs and charming villages.

Rooms

Daily Timetable

We do not run to a set timetable as this invariably changes due to the time of year and weather. However, we do maximise our time using the best light. Also using excellent weather apps and making the most of sunrise and sunset times which means varying start and stop times. Most days are long and filled with many on-location photo shoots.

Equipment Needs

A camera and tripod of some sort. Preferably a Digital SLR or mirror-less camera although this is not essential, many people attend the courses with a wide variety of non-DLSR cameras. The basic functions of any camera are the same and when it comes to composition or processing your images, the type of camera used is not a factor. It is also advisable to bring a spare camera battery and memory card. Any other photographic equipment you have you may bring along.

Computing Equipment

Your own laptop would be advantageous but non-essential.

Our locations have been extensively researched to ensure that we will have access to the most beautiful scenery with the least amount of effort.

Good outdoor clothing is essential due to good old Scottish weather which can change very quickly. You most definitely require waterproof boots plus wellies and the other essentials such as hats a gloves etc if you're not warm and dry you're not having fun.
